Support floods in for ex Claret ‘hit by lorry’

The former defender (35), who went on to become chairman of the PFA and on “Countdown” and “Question Time”, was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary with injuries first described as “life-threatening” after the incident near Bishopthorpe, North Yorkshire, at 7-30am.

It is now understood he is out of danger.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, which led to the road being closed.

A statement from the Professional Footballers’ Association said: “Everyone is keeping Clarke in their prayers and thoughts.

“We are offering our full help and support to him and his family.”

Burnley FC Tweeted: “The thoughts of all at Burnley Football Club are with Clarke Carlisle and his family.”

Carlisle is an ambassador for equality campaign body Kick It Out, who Tweeted: “The thoughts and prayers of everyone here are with Clarke and his family.

“Stay strong our dear friend - keep on fighting.”

Since his retirement, he has worked as a football pundit and championed anti-discrimination work within football.

Married with three children, he has also penned his autobiography, “You Don’t Know Me But ...”

An ambassador for mental health charity MIND, he presented a BBC documentary on “Football’s Suicide Secrets” where he talked candidly about his own battles with depression.
