Steven Thompson signs for St Mirren

RELEASED Clarets striker Steven Thompson has agreed a two-year deal with boyhood idols St Mirren.

Born in Paisley, the 32-year-old was a fan of the Buddies growing up, and realises a lifetime ambition.

Thompson saidL “I thought if I was going to come up the road then there was only one club I was going to go to. There were other Scottish clubs interested, but having supported St Mirren as a boy and with them being the closest club to where I was brought up and now live, it was a fairly straight-forward decision to make. It couldn’t have worked out any better for me.

“It will be really nice to play for St Mirren with them being my first love, the first team I ever went to see, and it will be a nice moment for my family as well.

“It was always an ambition of mine to play for St Mirren, I just didn’t know at what stage of my career.

“To be honest, I probably thought it wouldn’t happen until a year or two later, but with my daugher starting school it’s just all worked out perfectly.

“There were offers as well from the Championship and League One but I’d made my mind up what I wanted to do.

“Once I was coming back to Scotland there was only one place I wanted to come.”
