Miners football violence: Police seek 22 more men

An investigation was launched after trouble flared in Burnley Miner’s Club, Plumbe Street, after the match around 6pm on Saturday, January 18th.

This latest appeal follows the arrest of 14 people last week in connection with the incident. The men, who were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit violent disorder, have been released on bail while police continue their investigation.

The violence left a window at the club smashed and other damage, including broken furniture.

It is estimated between 45 to 60 people were involved in the violence, and police have released CCTV images of a further 22 people they would like to speak with in connection with the incident.

Det. Sgt Steven Acres, of Burnley Police, said, “This was a disgraceful incident of disorder and the level of violence involved was horrific.

“We have established Burnley Miners was very busy at the time of this attack, and the vast majority of people in there, including men, women and children, were enjoying themselves following the football match. This was a terrifying experience for them.

“What followed was completely unacceptable and left innocent bystanders fleeing for safety. We have a dedicated team of detectives investigating this incident and the arrests already made show we are determined to bring those responsible for this disorder to justice.

“I would appeal to people to view the images released and make contact with us if you are able to recognise any of those pictured.

“We are also keen to speak to anybody else who was in the Miners at the time of this attack to help us to build up a clearer picture of exactly what went on.

“Finally, I would also urge anybody who was involved in this disorder to contact us directly. We are continuing to work hard with the football club and the public and will do everything we can to identify and capture those responsible for this disgraceful behaviour.”
