Second England cap for Jay Rod?

In November, Jay Rodriguez became the first Burnley-born player in 111 years to represent England at senior level when making his debut in the 2-0 defeat to Chile at Wembley.

And he is in line to add to his first cap on Wednesday against Denmark after retaining his place in Roy Hodgson’s squad, named this afternoon.

Rodriguez started the Wembley friendly against Chile, to claim his first full cap, following in the footsteps of Billy Bannister and Jimmy Crabtree in 1902.

Both Brian Miller, born in Hapton, and Jerry Dawson, in Cliviger, were born in the borough, while Mike Phelan, who received his only cap against Italy in 1989, was born in Nelson.

Rodriguez lined up on the left of a front three, but endured a frustrating debut before being replaced by Spurs winger Andros Townsend on 57 minutes.

However, he has since scored eight in 19 games for Southampton, including one he didn’t celebrate in the Saints’ 4-3 FA Cup win over Burnley in January.

Rodriguez has 10 Premier League goals for the season, the same as Wayne Rooney, with Daniel Sturridge, with 18, the only English player with more.
