However, the Clarets needed a late goal from Martin Paterson to secure a point against Peterborough United after Darren Ferguson’s side had flipped the fixture on its head.

The Clarets let another lead slip the following week as they lost 2-1 to rivals Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium.

David Edgar headed past Adam Bogdan after the interval but substitutes Craig Davies and David Ngog condemned Sean Dyche’s men to defeat.

That loss sparked a run of three games without a goal as a drab 0-0 stalemate against Middlesbrough at Turf Moor was followed by solitary goal losses against Brighton at the AMEX Stadium and relegation-threatened Huddersfield Town on home soil.

A spirited display against the Seagulls had temporarily lifted the mood though David Lopez’s volley ultimately consigned the Clarets to defeat.

But it was a significantly less convincing display under the Turf Moor lights as the Terriers’ bite proved too much for their hosts as James Vaughan’s close range strike saw the Clarets without a win in six.

That sequence of results saw any play-off hopes well and truly evaporate as the Clarets found themselves eight points off the pace of the top six, languishing 13th in the Championship at the end of the month.
