While the season started with the Capital One Cup first round tie at Port Vale, it was the opening league clash against relegated Bolton Wanderers and a certain Owen Coyle that whetted the appetite.

The fixture computer threw up Coyle’s second return to Turf Moor after leaving the Clarets midway through the Premier League season for the Reebok Stadium, and after two months; anticipation, the atmosphere didn’t disappoint.

Burnley fans let their former boss know how they felt, two and a half years on, with, among the usual wit from the stands, a plane flying overhead, with a banner stating: Judas Coyle, You Reap What You Sow! Martin Paterson and Charlie Austin scored the goals to give the Clarets a flying start.

At League 2 Vale, having gone behind, Chris McCann, Dean Marney and Austin fired Burnley to a 3-1 win.

But back in league action, two away trips followed on the back of the Bolton win.

Austin opened the scoring at Middlesbrough, but Boro came back to lead, and despite a late leveller from Junior Stanislas, Luke Williams smashed in the winner for the hosts.

The Clarets were poor at Huddersfield, going down 2-0 to goals from Joel Lynch and Jordan Rhodes.

And August came to a close with the Capital One Cup second round tie at home to Plymouth Argyle.

Austin hit his fourth of the month, but a last-minute equaliser took the game to extra time, and penalties, where Brian Jensen saved three to put the Clarets through.
