The Welshman, called up to Chris Coleman’s squad this week for the Euro 2016 qualifier against Israel in Haifa on March 28th, stepped in for Michael Kightly in the 1-0 win over Manchester City at Turf Moor almost a year on from suffering a ruptured cruciate ligament.

The 25-year-old, who has made 11 first team appearances this term, netted 20 times in the Championship last season alongside England Under 21 international Ings who added 26 in all competitions.

“It would be great to get that going again. We’ve got nine games left of the season now so if we can keep going and reigite that form then it would be great.”

While his goals contributed to promotion last year, Vokes is determined to prove himself at the top level and ultimately help guide the Clarets to safety.

After getting through 87 minutes at the weekend, before being replaced by Stephen Ward, the striker said: “It was brilliant. It was great to get back out there and what a game to get it on. It was a massive result.

“That’s what I did in my rehab; building back towards this. This is a chance for me to prove myself at this level now.”

The former Wolves marksman insists his team-mates are brimming with confidence going in to the final nine games of the term, starting against Southampton at St Mary’s.

“It’s massive,” he said. “All this year we’ve done well against the top teams. We’ve got some more tough games coming up so we can definitely take the confidence from this in to those games.
