Ross Wallace wants a winning run

The Clarets are yet to win two games on the trot in the league and Wallace feels a good run is now needed to help push the club back up the league.

“It’s frustrating, but you just have to get on with it, we need a little spell like we had last year where we had an eight or nine game run. We need one of them pretty sharpish to give us a chance to push up the league.

“I prefer to play lots of games, Saturday, Tuesday, I don’t mind, I just want games thick and fast, that’s what we’re paid to do, play games. As soon as training starts, the lads want to get back playing and put things right, they want to get that winning feeling back, there’s no better feeling when you come off the pitch and you’ve won.”

Wallace is looking forward to the visit of Millwall tomorrow but is expecting a tough encounter, similar to last season’s matches.

“It’s a massive game against Millwall, they were a dogged side the last few times they’ve come to Turf Moor and they’ve done really well, it’s going to be a tough game.

“It’s a game that we never performed in last year, to be fair to them, they did their homework on us and played really well, they played a high intensity, they got in our faces, made tackles early on and we didn’t recover. This time we’ll have to match that, especially early doors, they’ll come flying at us again.

“Obviously you want to climb the table as quickly as possible, you want to stay not to far away from the pack. The next three games going into the next international break, it’d be nice if we could get a good bunch of points and get near that bunch at the top.

“We have got two home games and we’ve done pretty well at home this season. Just because we’ve done well doesn’t mean things are going to come easy for us. We need hard work, pressurising teams from the front, Millwall are a tough side to play against, they’re like Stoke in a way, they’re well organised, they’re going to be hard to play against, hard to break down, so we’re going to have to match that.

“When you look at the quality in our squad, if we can just get the whole team together again and rally the boys again, we’ve got the quality in there, it’s just a case of get the games coming thick and fast and pull the socks up and let’s go at it.”

From a personal point of view Wallace is relatively happy with the start he’s made to the season but feels there is still a lot more to come.

“I’ve not played every game. When I’m left out I’m disappointed, I don’t know about anybody else. We have got a good quality squad, especially in that position. Cameron’s done well when he’s come in. If we can keep the players fresh and 100% we should have a chance of doing well.

“You want to do well for yourself, there’s always that pressure, ‘have I played well?’. You don’t want to come off the pitch having had a bad game, because that night you’re thinking about it and can’t get to sleep.

“I want to score, I try to score every game, that’ll come, I know it’ll come. It’s just a case of doing the right things and trying to get in the right positions. I’ve been not too bad, I probably started better last season, but it’s a long season, there’s a ton of games to come yet and hopefully as the season goes on, everyone’s form will pick up as well.”

He also feels it’s imperative that the midfield start chipping in with a few goals and help remove some of the burden from Charlie Austin’s shoulders.

“Charlie’s done magnificent, that’s his job, he’s paid to score goals and at the minute he’s banging them in, he’s doing really well. If Charlie’s not top goalscorer at the end of the season, I think he’d be disappointed in himself, he’s a clinical finisher.

“It’s up to us to start chipping in. At the end of the season if the midfielders are touching seven, eight, nine, that’s plenty for a midfield.

“We’re creating chances and scoring goals, at the minute. We’re conceding too many goals and we need to look at that. Maybe the midfield can help the back four a bit more. The gaffer know’s all this, we’re going to work on this, we’ve got intelligent players, good players and it’s just hard graft now.”
