Rodriguez wants to score more goals for Burnley

But he admits his landmark 20th goal of the season was little consolation after seeing a 2-0 lead turn into a 3-2 defeat at Watford on Saturday.

The 22-year-old scored the opener at Vicarage Road to become the first Burnley player in eight years to reach 20 in a season.

Robbie Blake was the last, netting 22 in 2003/04, while Andy Payton bagged 27 on the way to promotion from the Second Division in 1999/2000.

And Rodriguez admitted: “It’s a great group to be among.

“Robbie’s a great player and Andy Payton was a great goalscorer.

“I’m really chuffed, but I want more.

“The main thing is getting three points on a Saturday, and that’s the most disappointing thing.”

Blake was in his second spell at Turf Moor when Rodriguez was emerging as a young professional at the club, and matching his achievement means a lot: “When I was growing up and first came to the club I looked up to someone like him – the way he plays and the way he conducts himself off the pitch, he’s a great guy.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for him.

“He’s someone who I’ve looked up to and want to be like.

“It was a bit of a dream to follow in his footsteps.”

Having hit 20, Rodriguez now wants to go on and add to his tally in the remaining 12 games and see if he can fire the Clarets back into play-off contention: “I don’t want to rest on 20, I want to score as many as I can and hopefully that will help the team get the three points each time, which is the main thing.

“We’ve just got to keep working hard and keep sticking to the gameplan and hopefully that will happen.

“But I am very proud. For myself I’m pleased with the 20 goals, but I would still like more.

“I don’t want to stop here, but to be honest I’m still disappointed with the game. We shouldn’t have got beaten.”

Saturday’s setback was hard to take, as the Clarets stole defeat from the jaws of victory, with Nyron Nosworthy’s own goal adding to Rodriguez’s opener just after the break, only for Burnley to ship three goals in 18 minutes to a limited Watford: “Everyone is disappointed.

“We shouldn’t even be talking about getting beaten.

“We stuck to the game plan, kept it solid and to get in front everyone was very happy.

“We were doing it right and then a mad 15 minutes cost us.

“It’s annoying that we lost a game we shouldn’t have.

“But we will go in to training and work hard and look forward to Saturday and try and put it right.

“That’s all we can concentrate on.”

Defeat came out of the blue, with Michael Duff’s half-time withdrawal with a dead leg a pivotal moment. Up until then Burnley were well in charge, and Rodriguez added: “I feel like we’ve been unlucky.

“We lost concentration in a mad 15 minutes and we’re all disappointed.

“We didn’t see it coming.

“We were in control, we stuck to our gameplan and looked solid, then all of a sudden we’re 3-2 down.

“We didn’t think anything could go wrong, but the end result suggests otherwise.”

Rodriguez might have snatched a draw but for a fine save from Tomas Kuszczak, and he smiled: “It was a good save.

He’s a great keeper so you expect it.”
