£6m man Gray represents good value for money

Burnley doubled their club record to land 24-year-old striker for £6m from Brentford.

And Dyche said: “He’s a young man who’s very hungry for it. Tony Loughlan brought him to my attention when we were at Watford and he was at Hinckley. I wish we’d had a gamble on him then to be fair but we had two crisp tokens to buy anything with!

“But it’s amazing how there’s this mythical story about money.

Steven Fletcher came here in 2009 as a record signing. When you look at the adjustment in the market since then it looks value.

“When you look at the adjustment from 2009 to where we are today and what’s happened in that time, I think it’s actually pretty reasonable.

“It sounds mad, but that’s the way it’s gone.”

Dyche was hardly spoiled for choice up front in the promotion season, with the only senior options being Sam Vokes and Danny Ings before the January arrival of Ashley Barnes.

He now has eight, and he admitted: “When I first got here we had two strikers. You want strikers and you want them in the building.

“There are two business ends of the pitch. We know defending is very important as well, but you need people who have got that goal threat and we’ve got it and we’ve added to it.

“Some of the younger ones may go out on loan.”
