Prince Charles is a Burnley FC fan: official

PRINCE Charles has revealed for the first time that he is a fan of Burnley Football Club.

The heir to the throne, who has visited Burnley three times in the last five years, has made no secret of his affection for the town and some of its iconic buildings, most notably the Weavers’ Triangle.

But, at reception for the British Asian Trust at Windsor Castle, the Prince, who was pictured sporting a claret and blue tie on a visit to Turf Moor in 2010, publicly declared his support for the Clarets.

He told guests at the dinner: “A consortium of my charities, including the British Asian Trust, has been working in Burnley.

“Hence, some of you asked this evening whether I support a British football club and I said: ‘Yes - Burnley.’

“And people have responded ‘Burnley?’ Oh yes, because Burnley has been through some very challenging times and I’m trying to find ways of helping to regenerate and raise aspirations and self-esteem in that part of the world.

“My charities have been working there together to demonstrate that an integrated approach can produce the best dividends.” Following the announcement the club said it will be sending a VIP gold season ticket for the 2012/2013 season to the Prince.

A club spokesman said: “A VIP gold season ticket will be on its way to the palace. It’s a fantastic endorsement. We’ve long known he was a fan and he has a great affinity with the town. But I think outside of Burnley, there’s always been some doubt.

“For him to finally come out and say he is a Burnley fan is fantastic and he has gone straight to the top of our celebrity fan list ahead of Alastair Campbell and that takes some doing.

“Obviously our door is always open to him and we hope to see him at Turf Moor next season, hopefully we’ll be in the Premier League.”
