And Dyche said: “It was certainly an interesting day at the office!

“I’ve not experienced that situation as a coach or player before, with three players having to come off so early in a game, and I thought we dealt with that fantastically well.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the players, their organisation, and some of their quality was outstanding.

“I thought Newcastle were excellent in the first 25 minutes, the reaction to the new manager - they were on the front foot, kept it and kept putting crosses in the box.

“We hung on, they went 1-0 up, we got the break with the own goal, they go 2-1, and with the thre changes, people probably think it’s going to be tough.

“It just shows the unshakeable desire and belief the players have in one another and how they operate.

“And when you hit the woodwork four times, and create the chances we did, it’s a head scratcher how we didn’t come away with a win.”

Dyche now has a waiting game on skipper Jason Shackell, Dean Marney and Kevin Long ahead of Monday night’s FA Cup third round tie with Spurs at Turf Moor: “Deano was a bit edgy but nothing major, then he looked over and said he was on the edge of vomiting, so we had to get him off.

“Shacks we don’t think is overly serious, we got him off quick, but Longy is the one we have to keep our fingers crossed over.”
