The Cottagers’ game at Spurs on Wednesday night was postponed due to coronavirus cases at Fulham, putting Sunday’s game at Turf Moor in doubt.

But if it goes ahead, the Clarets could give themselves a real cushion from the drop zone.

For Burnley to be in a position to push away from the wrong end of the table, having had to wait until their eighth game of the season for their first win, is a huge credit to Dyche and his stretched squad.

And while nothing has been settled at this stage, Dyche is delighted with a run of four wins and two draws from the last eight games: “The players deserve a lot of credit, as they always do.

“Early season I said we weren’t far away, we were missing very important players who have got fit, and lost a few along the way, so I’m even more pleased in that sense.

“The players keep bringing important performances. We’ve learned to operate in different ways in the Premier League to be effective enough to get enough wins and points over a season, and sometimes more than that.”

Burnley have lost twice in the last eight, at Manchester City and in controversial circumstances at Leeds on Sunday: “We were terrific at Leeds second half, where we all know what happened, and first half we were good (on Tuesday) to make two golden chances, against a side who are always in tight games Second half we showed a completely different side, having made changes with injury, people playing out of position, but all the basics were there to see us through.”
