Winning at grounds and against sides they hadn’t beaten in decades, if there was a graveyard or a bogey team to lay to rest, the Clarets did it, in style.

However, The Hawthorns holds the Indian sign over not only Burnley, but also boss Sean Dyche, who was careful not to bring it up before the game.

The Clarets have gone 10 without a win at the Baggies, going back to December 1969, and Dyche has also suffered terrible fortunes at Birmingham Road.

He explained after the heaviest defeat of his Turf Moor reign: “I broke my leg here when I was 17 with Nottingham Forest, since then I’ve never won here. It’s one of those rare ‘bock’ grounds I have. I’ve played at a lot of grounds, but never won here.”

Of course, hoodoos, jinxes, call them what you want, are there to be broken.

Burnley, however, as Dyche admitted afterwards, were simply not at the races from the first whistle.

Missing Danny Ings, Sam Vokes and Matt Taylor, they were also shorn of Dean Marney and David Jones, as their summer transfer dealings were severely tested - a test that, on this showing at least, showed the paucity of the options available in reserve.

In the absence of Marney and Jones, Sean Dyche went in 4-1-4-1 with Steven Reid holding against his former club, with Ross Wallace and Michael Kightly making their first league starts of the season, flanking Scott Arfield and George Boyd.

It looked a brave selection, and ultimately they ended up chasing a fluid West Brom midfield throughout.

Injuries to Marney and Jones were, in essence, papered over last season - if you can say as much in a promotion campaign - and there are no obvious replacements for them still, although the second half performance of loan man Nathaniel Chalobah was a positive, coming on for Reid at the break.

Burnley’s transfer window came under scrutiny again in that sense, while it was almost inevitable, affter a summer chasing West Brom centre back Craig Dawson, the Norden lad made the Clarets pay for a failure to land him, seeing three bids turned down.

The England Under 21 international peeled off the back of skipper Jason Shackell and headed in Chris Brunt’s corner on the half hour for his first goal for West Brom.

Despite Burnley’s impressive defensive form so far this season, boasting the second best record in the Premier League, goals against from set plays were problematic at times last season.

And a first league goal against in 367 minutes was followed just before half-time by another, again from a corner.

West Brom won their ninth flag kick of the half, summing up where most of the action was in the opening 45 minutes, and James Morrison’s ball in was flicked on at the near post by Scotland team-mate Graham Dorrans and headed in from a yard out by Saido Berahino.

The second half was marginally better, but the damage was done, and West Brom, in confident mood, added two more goals to secure their first back to back Premier League wins in 12 months.

After seeing their proud defensive form shattered, the wait for a goal goes on for the Clarets, who have now failed to find the net in 526 minutes in the league, and 616 in all competitions.

Burnley barely had a sight of goal in the first half, with their only threat seeing Michael Kightly volley over after Ben Mee and Shackell combined to tee the former Wolves man up from a Wallace corner.

The hosts bossed possession and, while the Clarets looked solid again at the back, the pressure built, without stretching Tom Heaton.

Chris Brunt saw a shot deflected wide off former Northern Ireland team-mate Michael Duff, before Berahino dragged an effort beyond the far post.

From a Brunt corner, Craig Gardner retrieved the ball and drilled it goalwards, Duff again forcing the ball behind.

But on the half hour, Brunt stood up another flag kick to the far post, and Dawson got up above Shackell to head in.

Brunt sent a volley over before Dorrans forced Heaton’s first save with a vicious 30-yarder which moved wickedly through the air.

Right on half-time the second goal arrived, from the Baggies’ ninth corner, and even at that stage it looked game over.

Dyche introduced Chalobah and Barnes for Reid and Wallace, and the England Under 21 international was eager from the off, although he was booked within two minutes for a studs up challenge on Gardner.

Just 11 minutes after the restart, the Baggies had the crucial third as Dorrans fed the ball in behind, and Berahino ran off the back of Duff, beyond Shackell, before a clinical finish across Heaton.

Burnley responded well and carved out a number of chances which provoked a semblance of discomfort in the home crowd.

First Trippier’s cross was met by Lukas Jutkiewicz, whose header was clawed out by Ben Foster, before Barnes slashed a shot wide.

Marvin Sordell replaced the luckless Jutkiewicz and was instantly involved, punching the ball wide from Barnes pass, before returning the favour, centering for Barnes, who hooked an effort over.

The response was short-lived though, as the game’s outstanding player Dorrans wriggled past Mee too easily before pulling a shot wide of the near post, before having the final say at the death, sweeping home a pull back from substitute Cristian Gamboa.
