BURNLEY are beaten at the Stadium of Light despite a late Steven Thompson goal.

Frazier Campbell put the hosts ahead when his head found Alan Huttons cross, a lead which was richly deserved.

Sunderland doubled their lead just before half-time when Campbell headed David Meyler’s chipped ball across the face of goal for Darren Bent to volley his 23rd goal of the season.

Burnley upped their game in the second half, but Steven Thompsons consolation goal in the 80th minute was the best they could muster.

Robbie Blake having just come on played a one-two with Danny Fox before laying the ball off for Thompson who’s shot gave Craig Gordon no chance.

Unfortunately Burnley couldn’t find an equaliser and the hopes of staying up are now hanging by a thread.
