Sam Vokes forced the midweek fixture when cancelling out Nacer Chadli’s opener at Turf Moor earlier in the month, but it was the eight-time winners of the competition that earned a home tie against Leicester City after a six-goal thriller.

Both Sean Dyche and Mauricio Pochettino made extensive changes to their respective starting XI from the weekend.

The Argentine drafted in goalkeeper Michel Vorm, Younes Kaboul, Vlad Chiriches, Paulinho, Roberto Soldado, Etienne Capoue and Ben Davies while the Burnley boss included Michael Duff, Ross Wallace, Vokes, Michael Kightly and Marvin Sordell.

After a dismal 45 minutes in the opening half of the previous meeting at Turf Moor, the replay proved to be remarkably different.

In an exhilarating start, Sordell and Wallace gave the visitors a two-goal lead after eight minutes before Paulinho hit back just two minutes and 22 seconds later.

Despite playing their sixth game in 19 days the Clarets showed no signs of fatigue. With less than three minutes on the clock, the flight of Trippier’s pass upfield was misjudged by Jan Vertonghen and Sordell netted his first competitive goal for the club with a stunning finish.

The 23-year-old followed let the ball bounce once before using the spin of the pass to take his effort away from Vorm to find the top corner. The Dutch stopper was rooted to his spot while captain Kaboul was nowhere to be seen.

The travelling fans were in dreamland moments later, though the majority of White Hart Lane sat in muted bewilderment.

Trippier was involved once more as his foray forward was rudely cut short and Wallace found the net with the resulting set-piece.

The Scot, who scored directly from a free-kick in the 2-2 draw against the Foxes at the King Power Stadium in October, benefited from a fortuitous flick off the head of Soldado on this occasion which wrong-footed Vorm and crept across the line.

But the away side allowed that cushion to slip far too easily. Townsend, who caused endless amounts of problems for Ben Mee, clipped the ball in to the box, Soldado flicked on and Paulinho was left with an inexplicable amount of time and space to compose himself before smashing home from close range.

Benjamin Stambouli blazed over after being teed up by Soldado in the 20th minute and pulled a shot wide minutes later from Rose’s assist. Townsend then missed the target with a curling effort from the angle of the penalty area.

The pressure was mounting and only an outstretched leg from Trippier prevented Rose converting Vlad Chiriches cross at the back post. From the resulting corner Kaboul sliced wide of the near post once Sordell cut out Stambouli’s centre.

Then Soldado, who has only netted four times since his £26m move from Valencia in the summer, somehow struck the bar from deep inside the six yard box from Townsend’s pinpoint pass after Scott Arfield was caught out by Paulinho on the halfway line.

However, the home side’s perseverance paid off in first half stoppage time. Davies’ cross broke for Stambouli on the edge of the box and the Frenchman beat Tom Heaton with a rasping drive to level.

Unfortunately for Dyche’s side, Spurs returned fired up and put the tie beyond the Clarets with a quick-fire double of their own.

Firstly Chiriches bundled over the line when beating Vokes to the ball at the back post following Heaton’s error from Townsend’s corner, and in the 51st minute Rose had the simplest of tap ins once Soldado peeled away from Mee courtesy of Stambouli’s precise pass.

Vorm denied Michael Kightly at his near post after the former Stoke City winger cut past Chiriches from the left hand side while Soldado went close again at the other end with a low attempt that whistled past the upright.

New-signing Michael Keane blocked from Capoue as the hosts looked to stretch their lead while Soldado’s shot on the turn nestled in the arms of Heaton.

The Clarets return to more pressing matters following their cup exit, with Crystal Palace the visitors to East Lancashire in the Premier League on Saturday.
