The nomadic striker notched his fifth and sixth goals of the season, both in the second half, as the Clarets climbed back in to second spot in the Championship.

Team-mate Danny Ings got the ball rolling in the 38th minute to enter double figures for the campaign as he ghosted in at the back post to touch Kieran Trippier’s cross past Ben Hamer from close range.

The fixture started at a pedestrian rate with the visitors happy to isolate Simon Church as the lone striker while employing to strict ranks to frustrate the hosts and restrict the openings.

Almost a quarter-of-an-hour of the Championship game had elapsed when the first shot on goal was registered; Sam Vokes spinning Addicks skipper Michael Morrison from Scott Arfield’s pass before dragging a low effort harmlessly wide.

Chris Powell’s side continued to plug the apertures, making it hard for the Clarets to impact, while springing attacks at any given opportunity. One such occasion saw Rhoys Wiggins squeeze inbetween midfielders Arfield and Dean Marney but Tom Heaton was untroubled by the resulting effort which skimmed well wide.

Heaton comfortably gathered Church’s header from Cameron Stewart’s inswinging cross midway through the half and five minutes later the goalkeeper stooped low to claim Wiggins’ driven free-kick after loanee Michael Kightly had felled Bradley Pritchard on the angle of the box.

Dorian Dervite got across well to block an Ings effort from inside the area after the striker had latched on to Vokes’s clever first time pass before the Welshman went close himself when glancing Trippier’s centre just wide of the far post from six yards out.

But the goal the Clarets desperately craved arrived just before the interval when Heaton’s clearance was flicked on by Vokes - who outjumped Wiggins - and Trippier hit the bye line before firing the ball across the face of goal, beyond Morrison, for Ings to nonchalantly guide home at the back post.

Addicks substitute Callum Harriott, who had replaced Pritchard after the break, fired over in a tepid opening third but it was Sean Dyche’s change that prompted the spark. Junior Stanislas, introduced at the expense of Kightly, started the move centrally and involved Arfield and Marney in an intricate build-up before the latter slipped in Vokes who lifted a sumptuous effort over Hamer and in to the far corner.

Powell then made another change, replacing Mark Gower with Marvin Sordell, but the transition was all too late. It was a change, coupled with Harriott’s introduction, that gave the home side something to think about as the pair contributed with their lively, direct attributes.

Church headed wide from Stewart’s cross in a brief reprieve while the striker couldn’t quite make contact with Harriott’s cross at full stretch after combining with Sordell down the left.

Moments later, Marney picked up his fifth booking of the season for a lunge on Wiggins which rules the midfielder out of Tuesday’s fixture with Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium.

But, in all honesty, the home side’s clean sheet never looked under significant threat. At the other end, with five minutes remaining, Ings clipped the bar with a header from Ben Mee’s cross before the third and final goal arrived in the final minute.

Stanislas provided the corner and Vokes crept in front of his marker to meet the set piece with a thunderous volley that rocketed in to the roof of his net. It was the first time in five years that the striker grabbed a brace, with that one coming in a 3-1 victory for Wolves also against Charlton Athletic.
