Burnley's hopes of progressing to the fourth round of the competition were dented after Brian Stock was sent off in a dismal first half.

The midfielder was dismissed just minutes before the interval for two yellow card offences by match official Paul Tierney.

The first incident surrounded a dispute with Barnsley striker Marlon Harewood while the second, in the 41st minute, saw Stock drag down Jim O'Brien on the edge of the box.

That red card, as harsh as it was, proved the only talking point in a first half lacking any real quality or opportunities.

Stephen Dawson skipped past Stock in the opening exchanges before firing wide from distance with Brian Jensen, making a rare start, untroubled.

The best and most fluent move of the opening 45 minutes saw Dean Marney, back from a thigh strain, and Ross Wallace swap possession in the centre of the park before Danny Ings drove at the home side's rearguard and slipped a pass left to Sam Vokes who bent a low, first-time effort around the far post.

Defender Michael Duff headed over from Wallace's set-piece after Ings had been felled by Jimmy McNulty and as Tom Kennedy misjudged Jensen's long clearance, Wallace went close as goalkeeper Luke Steele had to palm from underneath the bar as his looping, deflected cross looked like creeping in at the far post.

Both sides struggled to get a foothold in the game, neither having the craft or invention to string together a passage of play, therefore both Jensen and Steele remained relatively untroubled. David Perkins bent an effort around the near post and Wallace rifled over the bar from Ings' lay-off as openings were limited to speculative attempts from distance.

The home side had the best chance to break the deadlock following Stock's dismissal but Chris Dagnall somehow blazed over after Jason Shackell's last ditch challenge denied Marlon Harewood deep inside the area.

The second half didn't improve much and any attacking threat the visitors had was restricted when boss Sean Dyche looked to add balance by replacing Keith Treacy with David Edgar.

Dawson missed a sitter when scuffing his effort wide, unmarked, from deep inside the area and the midfielder went close again, rifling over the woodwork from the edge of the box following good work inside the area from Golbourne and Harewood.

This was by no means a cup classic on a miserable afternoon at Oakwell, though the travelling support were in fine voice throughout. However, the only reward for their following was half chances as Vokes pulled wide from Wallace's pass.

Jamaican international Dane Richards, on loan from MLS outfit Vancouver Whitecaps, was then introduced for his first taste of English football, replacing Wallace midway through the second half. And, spurred on by chants of "he's quicker than Bolt", he made an immediate impact, winning a corner which Shackell eventually headed wide.

After Perkins bent a delicate, left-footed effort around the angle, Richards threatened again, bursting in to the area only to be denied a shooting opportunity by Golbourne's late challenge. O'Brien then sliced halmlessly wide as the hosts pressed for a breakthrough.

The deadlock was broken with five minutes remaining when Marney was booked for a foul on Rose near the touchline and the latter proved to be in the right place at the right time to pounce on the rebound from Golbourne's free-kick. Jensen led still in his net, head in hands, astonished by his mistake.

Trippier's free-kick looped over off the wall in the closing stages, Vokes was unable to apply the required touch to the full-back's centre minutes later and Marney hammered wide on the half-volley as the Clarets searched for the equaliser, but it wasn't to be.
