Partnership with Gray is growing says Vokes

The Welshman scored his third goal of the term to secure victory against Rotherham United at the New York Stadium after his £6m strike partner had opened the scoring against the Millers.

Ashley Barnes and England international Danny Ings were the last pair to combine when Sean Dyche’s side let a two-goal lead slip against West Brom at Turf Moor in the Premier League.

“He’s a very similar player to what Ingsy was, and also different I suppose because he works off the shoulder,” said Vokes.

“He showed on Friday with his goal that he can work off the back of defenders and create goals for us there and for both of us it was nice to get the goals and tick off the three points.

“When you both score you’re both buzzing and confident and it feels a good partnership. It would be nice to form that.

“It’s important that we work hard together and it pays off in games and obviously scoring goals helps that.

“It’s important that you get that going but there are the other lads as well with Rouwen (Hennings) and Longy (Chris Long) who can come in.

“We’re all different strikers and can give different qualities to the strike force.”

After moving level on goals with defender Michael Keane, he added: “I’m managing to catch up with Keano. You don’t really want to be chasing a centre half for top goalscorer!

“But it was nice to get another goal and keep chipping away.”

The 25-year-old will now join up with his international team mates as Wales bid to end a 58-year absence from major tournaments.

Just two points are needed from their forthcoming UEFA Euro 2016 Group B qualifiers for Chris Coleman’s men to book their seats on the plane to France.

And Vokes was happy to go in to the games away at Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday and the clash against Andorra at the Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday on the back of success domestically.

“It’s always nice to get that because if you don’t get the win going into that period it’s two weeks to wait until the next game,” he said. “It was nice to seal that on Friday.

“It’s always nice to get on the scoresheet, obviously with the circumstances as well after they brought it back to 1-1. To get the win, it was nice.

“It’s a massive three points.

Vokes added: “It would be nice (to seal qualification with Wales) because we’ve got three tough games when we come back.

“There’s Bolton, Forest and obviously the big one the following week so it would be nice to come back having done something good there.”
