Padiham invite for Hearts!

DESPITE working relentlessly for two days to get the Arbories pitch ready for Padiham’s fixture against Formby, match referee Ben Toner called the game off just three hours before kick-off on Saturday.

Club officials had been confident that the Vodkat North West Counties fixture would be given the go-ahead, with the surface not posing any danger to the players.

Padiham secretary Alan Smith said: “Granted the sun wasn’t as strong as it was the day before, but the temperature was rising, so it was a big blow for the referee to call the game off.”

Meanwhile, Padiham Reserves’ away game at AFC Darwen was also postponed, as was Padiham FC’s A team game at Fennyfold against Borrowdale United.

Off the pitch, officials at Padiham Football Club are trying to re-arrange a game that was cancelled 125 years ago.

‘The game that never was’ didn’t get called off because of the weather, but because the Storks’ opponents failed to turn up!

What was the match and who were Padiham’s opponents?

In the 1885/86 season, Padiham were drawn at home to current Scottish Premier League side Heart of Midlothian in the first round of the FA Cup competition.

However, for reasons unknown, Hearts failed to turn up for the cup tie and Padiham were given a ‘walkover’ into the second round.

To commemorate the 125th anniversary of the fixture, and to remember a period where Scottish clubs were entered into the FA Cup, Padiham have invited the SPL club, who beat Rangers 1-0 at the weekend, to send a team down to play the Storks in this year’s Padiham Sports Week.

The Storks management committee are now awaiting the outcome of a meeting the Scottish club is having about the proposal.

Padiham FC Ladies 8, Accrington Ladies 3

PADIHAM Ladies played their first Lancashire FA Womens County League fixture since November 7th, and thrashed Accrington Girls and Ladies at Shuttleworth College.

The Storks were leading 4-1 at half-time, and doubled their tally in the second half.

Elise Howarth scored five for the hosts, Justine Wallace grabbed a brace and Lizzie White etched her name on the scoresheet.

This Sunday Padiham Ladies are at home again, this time against Salford Ladies, with kick-off at 1-30 p.m. at Shuttleworth College.

Tonight Colne will entertain the Storks in a local derby at Holt House.

The friendly match will kick-off at 7-30 p.m.
