Tiggi is hat-trick hero for county

Striker Tiggi, who turned 14 last week, scored one in the first half and two after the break as the girls recorded a 4-0 win over Kent at Stoke City’s bet365 Stadium in the Girls’ Under 14 Inter-County Cup Final on Saturday.

Tiggi, who started out with Burnley Girls aged nine, also scored the winning goal in the semi-final against the West Midlands to take Lancashire through to the final.

Tiggi has just been offered a contract for the Under 16s at Blackburn Rovers Academy after coming through tough trials for their Regional Talent Club.

Tiggi is proving a goal-den girl as her double has already helped Lancashire Under 14s win the Northern League Cup this season, beating Durham 3-0.

* Year 10 footballers at Blessed Trinity Roman Catholic College are hoping to make it a hat-trick of Lancashire Cup wins. The team won the county trophy as Year Sevens and Eights and now face Clitheroe Grammar School in the final mid-May.

They beat St George’s in Blackpool 3-0 in the first round before seeing off Ormskirk High School by the same scoreline in the second round. In the third round they overcame Haslingden High School 3-2 and then in the quarter-finals beat Broughton High School in Preston 4-1. They celebrated a 5-2 victory over Holy Cross in Chorley in the semi-final. They have a number of players at professional clubs: Luke Stowe, Jack Doherty and Jak McKinlay are at Accrington Stanley while striker Tom Claxton is at Rochdale.

* Blessed Trinity Roman Catholic College celebrated double success as two of their teams will now represent Burnley.

The Year Seven and Eight Orienteering team won the Burnley schools competition and will now represent the town at the Inclusive Lancashire Youth Games.

The Year Seven and Eight football team overcame Unity 7-0 and Ridgewood 4-0 and will now go to Blackpool to represent Burnley at the same event.

Trinity battled it out against 30 Burnley children in the football competition, and will now represent the district at the SPAR Lancashire School Games county finals, where they will compete against teams from 14 other Lancashire districts.

Helen Tyson, school games organiser for Burnley, who arranged the event, said: “All schools who took part in the football matches throughout the day give it their best shot.

“Although Blessed Trinity Roman Catholic College were clear winners they had a tough challenge on their hands from some extremely strong competitors.

“The SPAR Lancashire School Games is about encouraging young adults to take part in inclusive, competitive sport at all levels and each year we see more and more pupils getting active, which is what we aim to achieve.

“Thank you to Sir John Thursby College for hosting the event – the day would not have been possible without you.”

Organised by Active Lancashire, the SPAR Lancashire School Games comprises a series of inclusive sporting events that provides competitive and participative opportunities for all school children across the county.

Children across Lancashire will continue to battle it out in a range of sports to gain a place at the SPAR Lancashire School Games county finals at Blackpool’s Stanley Park on July 3rd.
