Adam Freeland scored a hat-trick of headers as Padiham sprung the surprise of the weekend in the Hallmark Security League by beating promotion-chasing Runcorn Town 4-0.

The defender proved to be a huge threat from set-pieces in the Premier Division clash at the Ruby Civil Arena as the Storks derailed their opponents title ambitions.

Spencer Jordan completed the scoring for the home side who climbed to eighth in the table.

Meanwhile, Town are now seven points adrift of rivals Runcorn Linnets who won 3-1 at home to Congleton Town.

The club’s managerial team took to social media to display their pride in the team’s performance with joint manager Liam Smith tweeting: “Best performance of the season by a country mile. Proud of every single one of them today. Up the Storks.”

Dixon Lambert added: “Great performance today v a good team 4-0 flattered them should have been that at half time.”

And coach Alex Norwood posted: “Top @Padiham_FC performance against a good side, lads were class. Love a clean sheet.”

Padiham travel to the WEC Group Anchor Ground on Saturday to take on AFC Darwen who were thrashed 10-0 by Bootle in their latest outing at the TDP Solicitors Stadium.
