Speculation linked the pair to Burnley’s old enemy, causing upset among sections of the Clarets support, including legendary striker Andy Payton, who wrote on facebook: Speculation was so strong that Andy Payton posted on Facebook: “In my opinion as a former Burnley FC striker, knowing our history and the loyalty of the supporters and also having been lucky enough to have worn the claret and blue no. 10 shirt, scoring 82 times, the LAST thing on my mind would be even contemplating holding talks ??? with a certain club ten miles from Turf Moor!!! Don’t insult our tradition and our fans!!!!!”

But the players’ representative Gary Mellor knocked the rumours on the head: “Neither Chris McCann or Martin Paterson have spoken to Blackburn Rovers.”
