Nelson man cleared of violent disorder following Burnley Miners’ Club brawl

A Nelson man has today been cleared of violent disorder following the latest trial into a large-scale disturbance at Burnley Miners’ Club.

Simon Massey (50), of Avondale Road, Nelson had denied the charge relating to the incident in January last year following Burnley Football Club’s home match against Sheffield Wednesday.

The jury at Preston Crown Court took just 36 minutes to find him not guilty.

Twelve other men from Burnley, Padiham and Rochdale admitted violent disorder last September and are awaiting sentence. Five other men, from Burnley, will be tried at a later date.

Police were called after a serious brawl broke out inside the club’s Benedictine bar resulting in broken furniture and smashed windows.
