UNHAPPY BOSS: Steve Lomas was disappointed his side did not hold out for victory

The Lions went into the game on the back of draws with QPR and Reading, and were on course for their first win since September after goals from Australian striker Scott McDonald and a fortuitous deflected 25-yarder fro centre back Danny Shittu.

Sam Vokes halved the deficit within 47 seconds, before Michael Kightly beat keeper David Forde and saw his effort turned in by Shane Lowry to equalise 10 minutes after the break.

Scott Arfield struck a post as Burnley dominated the second half and searched for the winner, while Vokes should have had a penalty as he was tripped by Nicky Bailey as he reacted to the rebound.

But Lomas was encouraged by what he saw against the Championship leaders: “We’re improving and we can take heart from the way that we have played against three good sides in QPR, Reading and Burnley.

“We’ve now got to focus on turning these draws into wins.

“If you can get two or three victories it can really push you up the table.

“We’re a little disappointed with their second goal from a defensive point of view.

“We paid the price for not quite defending well enough.

“Before that we hoped to go into half-time with the 2-0 lead but had a bit of misfortune with the goal they pulled back.”

The Lions boss confirmed that left back Scott Malone, who was replaced after just seven minutes with a knee problem picked up fouling Arfield, will have a scan: “Scott has a knee injury and, if I’m honest, we are quite concerned that it is a bad one.”
