Midfielder Jones not in it for the ride!

The 29-year-old, who made 75 appearances at the top of the English pyramid with Derby County and Wolves, wants to help the Clarets compete among the country’s elite.

The former Manchester United man faced an intolerable campaign with the Rams in 2007/08 as Paul Jewell’s side registered a record low number of points with 11.

And Jones, who was on the bench in Derby’s only win that season against Newcastle United at Pride Park, doesn’t want a repeat.

Ahead of the plush fixture with Arsenal at the Emirates, he said: “We don’t want to go to places to give it a go, put in a performance, but leave with nothing. We want to be picking up points and surviving in this league. We’ve got a chance to rise to the occasion against Arsenal and get the result we want.

“It doesn’t get any easier, not at all. We’ll have to work on a few things, we’ll take some positives out of this game to Arsenal. It’s going to be difficult but we’ve got to go there with belief and try and get a victory. We need to get a result.

“We worked really hard last year to get in to this position, to be playing against Premier League players, and this week, like every week, is going to be a tough challenge.”

Jones is now challenging Sean Dyche’s side to produce the complete performance in their bid to pick up a first maximum of the term. Jones believes that he and his team-mates need to be more ruthless in all areas of the pitch in order to get the edge at this level.

“You get punished in this league,” he said. “Although we feel like we’re putting in some good team performances, we just need those moments in each box to make us better. We need to put the ball in the back of the net and keep it out at the other end as well.

“We’ll get stronger, definitely. We just need that belief, and put everything in to a performance. We’ve not quite done that yet to get the win. We’ll keep working hard in hope of getting that complete performance where the fine margins will go in our favour.

“You get punished against top players as we’ve witnessed. They’ll punish you with half chances, or just one chance where they’ll put it away. We’ve got to learn to be just as ruthless. In quite a few performances this season we’ve played well but it’s not been good enough.”

Danny Ings netted his first Premier League goal in the weekend loss to Everton at Turf Moor. Now Jones believes the striker will reap the benefits from that.

“He’s a striker and he’ll want to score goals,” Jones said. “He took his goal really well so we’re very pleased for him. He’s got great ability, he’s still young, he’s still learning and he’s going to be a top player.”
