Mee enjoying the season of his life

Ben Mee admits he is enjoying the season of his life after being crowned overall supporters' player of the year at Turf Moor on Tuesday night.

The Clarets defender picked up six awards from the various supporters’ clubs, ahead of Joey Barton with four, and the 26-year-old also won the fans’ survey held on the night.

Burnley are unbeaten in 21 league games since the former Manchester City youngster was paired at centre back with Michael Keane, and Mee now wants to cap off his achievement with promotion and the title.

Asked whether this has been his best season, he admitted: “I think so. Getting to be able to play back at centre half, using that experience I’ve gained in the last few years, has really helped me.

“I think it’s the best season I’ve had and I want to end it on a real high.

“I felt I was playing well at full-back as well. I’ve enjoyed the season on a whole, I enjoyed it at the beginning of the season and at the minute it’s going really well for us and we just need to get the job done.

“But it’s a real honour to be recognised by the fans. It’s great for me to be able to receive the awards.”

Andre Gray was named the FourFourTwo magazine and SkyBet Championship player of the season, making Mee’s success all the more remarkable.

It is harder for defenders to claim the headlines as well, and he smiled:”Yeah, that’s true. The goalscorers get recognised a lot, fair enough, their job is the hardest job on the pitch.

“To be recognised is great and for people to see what I’ve been doing on the pitch and to show their appreciation by voting for me is great and it means a lot.”

Mee was signed by Eddie Howe in the summer of 2011 as a centre back, but playewd two and a half seasons as a left back under Sean Dyche before moving back inside, and Mee feels he has only benefited from the experience: “I think it helped me because I got to play a lot games and I got to learn the first team game at full back that’s helped me in a way.

“It does help players see games in different ways.

“I don’t mind playing full-back but at the minute I see centre half as my position. I felt like I was playing well at full back, I’ll do whatever is needed.”

All eyes are now on QPR on Monday, and Mee is eager to get going: “We’re looking forward to it, it’s a long wait, you want to get it here and now.

“It’s a bit of time to rest our legs and then we’ll go again.

“It’s in our hands and if we win two games that’s it, that’s our aim and I’m sure it’s something we’ll achieve.”
