Marney: We have got to see these games out

MIDFIELDER Dean Marney scored his first goal for the club, and first since last November, but wasn’t celebrating after Sheffield United’s last-gasp equaliser.

Marney headed in Chris Eagles’ cross just after the break to put the Clarets 1-0 up, and Burney went on to lead 2-0 and 3-2 only to come away with a point.

The former Hull man admits the away form has to improve, however, after taking only four points from a possible 18 so far: “We should have won at Palace and the lads did great against Millwall to get a point and could have won that game.

“Being 2-0 up against Sheffield United, we should be seeing that game out really.

“We’ve got another game against Barnsley on Tuesday (tonight) but we can’t dwell on it. Obviously we’re disappointed, but we’re back in training to work hard and concentrate on beating Barnsley.

“This game’s gone now, we can’t do anything about it, all we can do is affect the Barnsley game and make sure we win that.

“We’ve done well at home this season, but we do need to start picking up wins away from home if we want to get out of this division.

“Home form’s massively important but you won’t go up just based on your home form. We’ve got to start getting three points away.”

Marney’s header was followed up by a Chris Eagles penalty, and although Burnley allowed the Blades back in the game, Jay Rodriguez made it 3-2 in the 90th minute from Marney’s pass - only to ship a third goal at the other end: “They went very direct, launching balls in and we got a little bit too deep.

“I still felt on the counter attack we were going to nick one and when Jay scored I thought that was it.

“The spirit is unbelievable and I think that showed. But we’re better than that, to be 2-0 up and draw the game.”

Marney hadn’t scored since netted for Hull in a 3-2 win over Everton last November, and he is eager to build on his first for Burnley.

He said: “I felt like the goal had been coming. In training I’ve been working hard and practising with the coaches.

“A few people said they fancied me to score, so that was nice.

“Having gone without a goal I was starting to think about it a little bit, but hopefully a few will follow now. When I signed I said that adding goals was something that I really needed to do.

“I don’t think I’ve scored more than six or seven in one season, so I do need to add that to my game. It’s vitally important that midfielders chip in with goals.

“I heard the keeper call and I thought ‘I’m going to get absolutely clattered here’. But I thought if I scored and I get clattered, it don’t mind.”

A total of 11 Burnley players have now scored so far this season, and Marney is pleased with the potential for goals in the side: “We’ve got a few lads who can score goals.

“Chris Iwelumo, Chris Eagles and Jay have been scoring.

“From set pieces we’ve got a lot of lads who, with the quality of the delivery into the box, can be put away.

“There are definitely goals in the team. We’ve got a strong bench and a lot of competition for places.”

Rodriguez’s strike was his third of the season, and Marney feels there is more to come: “Jay’s been doing great. He’s come into the team and taken his chance and that’s a few goals he’s got now, and long may it continue.”
