Vintage Clarets held by Greens

THE sun came out just in time for Vintage Clarets Day at Burnley Belvedere Football Club on Sunday, with the match going ahead only after a late pitch inspection by local referee Mark Corns.

A large crowd braved the earlier torrential rain to see a strong Vintage Clarets team take on a Burnley Belvedere XI that included players past and present.

The Clarets line up included many familiar faces, including members of the 1992 Fourth Division Championship-winning side - John Francis, John Deary and Graham Lancashire.

For a friendly, the match itself was keenly contested, with the Clarets going in at half-time 1-0 up thanks to a George Oghani strike that squirmed under keeper Simon Bez Burrows.

Belvedere started the second half strongly and equalised through a stunning Nathan Flynn strike from 25 yards that left Craig Mawson helpless.

After that the game could have gone either way, with both sides having chances.

At the final whistle a draw was probably a fair result.

On the whole the day was a huge success, with the Belvedere clubhouse buzzing with Clarets fans, and plenty of much-needed funds being raised for the club.
