Shuttleworth College’s Year 10 football team got a surprise when Burnley boss Sean Dyche presented them with the Keighley Cup at Turf Moor last Tuesday.
Shuttleworth faced Unity College in the final – a team they had never previously beaten – and Brad Ditch was on target with the only goal of the showdown after a Lennon Steen corner bounced back off the crossbar.
Shuttleworth had overcome Blessed Trinity in the semi-final, running out 5-1 winners with Ditch scoring a hat-trick and Mason Hughes and Harry Kerrigan grabbing the other goals.
The final was a tighter affair, and Shuttleworth needed a calm and assured performance from debutant Jason Woolford in goal, while midfielder Liam Gidley’s throw-ins created a host of chances for the Padiham school.
Clarets boss Dyche, who was at the Burnley Supporters’ Clubs’ Player of the Year awards at Turf Moor, came away to present the medals to the winners, with captain Declan McCluskey lifting the prestigious Keighley Cup.
The full Shuttleworth squad was: Jason Woolford, Dale Benson, Cameron Thornton, Declan McCluskey (captain), Jack Halstead, Lennon Steen, Jack Billington-Calvert, Levi Ostle, Liam Gidley, Mason Hughes, Brad Ditch, Harry Kerrigan, Bailey Bowden, Leyton Crook.
