READ United put some recent poor form behind them to emerge victorious against a high flying Feniscowles side.

On a terrible pitch, Read adapted to the conditions well working the channels constantly putting the visitors on the back foot.

United winger Kyle O’Connor set the tone for the game with a rasping drive that stung the keepers’ gloves.

The hosts handed last season’s top scorer Andy Bennett a first league start, and he duly repaid manager Dale Tattersall’s faith, collecting Jordan Neary’s raking cross field ball, Bennett showed composure and accuracy to send a curling effort past a despairing keeper.

Stand in United stopper Chris Holt called on his skills as a cricket professional with some superb handling as well as some unorthodox goalkeeping to keep Feniscowles at bay.

Callum Little and Andrew Arkwright orchestrated proceedings in midfield, with Little’s driving runs proving a headache for the visitors all afternoon.

After the break United flashed a series of tantalizing crosses across the face of the visitors goal, with the final touches evading front-men Bennett, O’Connor and Richard Wilson.

The hosts then doubled their lead when Little collected the ball deep, before powering through the Feniscowles back line clipping the ball past the onrushing keeper into the far corner.

The visitors rarely troubled a back line marshalled by captain Matthew Benfield, but could have clawed one back when Eddlestone found himself free in the area, with the goal at his mercy the front man fired wide.

The hosts began to dominate possession, Duane Knippet finding pockets of space in between lines created numerous opportunities for Bennett to double his tally. One snapshot from the returning striker whistled past the post with the keeper stranded.

United had a late scare when James Murray’s back pass to Holt was met with a fresh air shot, the ball looked like it was destined for the net before Holt scrambled the ball off the line to prevent a comical own goal.

Lustre was added to the scoreline when Bennett’s delicious free kick was well anticipated by skipper Benfield, who met the ball at the far post to secure the points for United.
