TWO goals apiece for Stuart Telfer and Paul Fildes guided Padiham to victory in an action packed encounter against 10-man Rossendale United at Dark Lane.

An end-to-end start to the game saw Rossendale forward Stephen Burke get free and shoot straight at Storks keeper Sean Davis.

Paul Barrett then chipped an effort over the bar a minute later before Joseph Brobbin was equal to Damien Morrison’s attempt.

The opening goal arrived in the 10th minute when a Padiham corner caused confusion in the Rossendale defence and Telfer took full advantage as he popped up to scramble home at the near post.

Telfer had another opportunity shortly after but Brobbin saved his chip.

The hosts’ sharp shooter Burke wasted a good chance when he fired wide after being played in on goal, while Padiham also squandered a chance as Fildes freed Barrett.

Burke continued to cause problems and Davis did well to deny him from point blank range. On the half hour mark, however, a Padiham break down the right ended with Ed O’Neill laying off a pass to Fildes, whose first time shot flew past Brobbin.

The home side pulled one back in the 38th minute when a needless foul by Keiran Fletcher just outside the area allowed Jamie Baguley to float in a superb cross which Burke headed home.

And three minutes later Rossendale found themselves level when a quick ball in from the right found Burke unmarked to head in.

The second half was hit by a swirling wind and driving rain, making it difficult for both sides. However, Padiham took control of the fixture the moment Jordan Hulme replaced the injured Barrett in the 52nd minute.

Hulme was brought down just after the hour, gifting Fildes the opportunity to restore the Storks’ lead from the penalty spot. Hulme then finished off a superb Padiham move on 72 minutes, converting a low, hard cross from Fildes following good work from O’Neill to make it 4-2.

That soon became 5-2 when Fildes turned provider again after beating the off-side trap and crossing for Telfer to convert.

Burke went close to grabbing his hat-trick with a shot against the upright, before ossendale United’s Daniel Ellis was sent off for head-butting John Blackley.

Padiham entertain Atherton LR at the Arbories tomorrow (Saturday), kick-off 3 p.m. Manager Craig Chadwick will be without Davis, Fletcher and midfielder Ben Hoskin who are all serving suspensions for the fixture.
