BURNLEY College Advanced level Public Services student Marko Marosi has taken a chance at Premier League Wigan Athletic with both hands.

The opportunity to impress at the DW Stadium came about through a recommendation by Barry Knowles, head coach of Burnley College Football Academy.

Marko, who has featured for North West Counties Premier League side Barnoldswick Town this season, explained: “Barry Knowles, the college coach recommended me to the club. I came for a trial, and played for their Under 18s against the club’s Under 21s. They liked me after the game and asked me to come back for two weeks.

“I trained every day with the first team, and then they asked me to train with them until the end of the season. If they are impressed with my development in that time, then they may offer me a contract.”

Although Marko is training full-time at Wigan, he is still on course to complete his diploma. He said: “The manager Roberto Martinez wants me to carry on with my studies as he realises how important it is for me to further my education and progress.”

Marko was selected for the England Colleges squad in 2012, added: “The coaches at the college, Barry Knowles, Gerry Harrison and Andy Fairman have all played a part in my progress and helped me to succeed.”
