Loan star Vokes enjoying life at Turf Moor

The Wolves hitman proved to be the match winner against West Ham at the weekend as he powered a header past England international keeper Robert Green from Ross Wallace’s corner in the 75th minute.

The 22-year-old has now scored twice since arriving at the club prior to the 2-1 defeat at home to Leeds and he’s determined to add more to that total before he returns to the Midlands next month.

“It was a massive win for us, that’s nine points in the last week, so it’s been huge.

“Personally it’s good to get the goal as well.

“That’s why I came on loan, to play some games and as a striker scoring goals is a massive part of my game.

“The last couple of games have been good.

“If I can get as many games and goals under my belt as I can until January that will be fantastic.

“I’ve only been here two weeks so this has been an introduction really so hopefully I can prove myself more and more during my time here and see what happens.”

The striker manifested the character of manager Eddie Howe’s squad after being dropped to the bench for the trip to Upton Park and impacting on the clash as a 69th minute substitute, replacing former Hammer Junior Stanislas.

Howe instead brought Dean Marney into the starting XI to strengthen the midfield and match the 4-5-1 formation employed by opposite number Sam Allardyce.

“I spoke to him (Eddie Howe) on Friday and we had a chat,” said Vokes.

“I think it was the right formation to play against them.

“We did well the whole game and even when I came on we stayed with one up front and it paid off in the end.

“Eddie became assistant while I was at Bournemouth so I knew what he was like to work under and that was a big plus point in me coming here.

“He made the subs to change the game so big credit to him there.”

He added: “If you’re on the bench and you get your chance to come on you’ve got to prove yourself and prove that you’re good enough to get in the team again. It was a good day.”

The Clarets were languishing in 19th position when Vokes arrived in East Lancashire.

Now the striker can’t believe the club’s change of fortune sparked by the dramatic comeback against Hull City.

“The belief is huge,” he said. “I’ve been talking with a few of the lads and the big turning point was with 15 minutes to go at Hull.

“We were 2-0 down, everybody’s written us off, and we’ve turned it around.

“That same spirit came out and we managed to turn it around here as well.

“It’s two big wins for us in a similar sort of style.

“Going down away from home people tend to right you off when you’re at the wrong end of the table but we’ve shown good spirit to come back.”

Vokes added: “When I first arrived we were looking at the relegation zone but now we’re obviously talking about the play offs.

“That’s what a week can do in this league and we’ve proved that we’re good enough to be up there.”

And Vokes confessed that he would be keen to extend his stay with the Clarets, should that be an option when his current loan spell expires. He said: “Yes of course.

“I don’t want to say too much at this moment in time but it’s been a good couple of weeks so far.”
