Last-gasp winner for Burnley FC ladies

Burnley FC Ladies got off to a positive start in the North West Regional Ladies League with a 2-1 win over former National League team Tranmere Rovers.

From the outset both teams were determined to press the opposing defences, and an end to end game developed, though the Clarets had the majority of possession.

However the Clarets were unable to take advantage and on 13 minutes they found themselves 1-0 down after a Tranmere attack through the middle caught the Burnley defence out, and a shot beat young keeper Emily Rogers’ left hand.

Tranmere soon followed up with another attack but this time the Rogers pulled off a superb save by diving and pushing the ball past her right-hand post.

Burnley had chances to equalise, but the Tranmere keeper remained solid.

Player of the match Steph Meeks, Kelly Ronson and Laura Hesketh all went close, but their luck was out.

The half-time team talk was positive, with input from all team members who were determined to get back into the game.

At the restart the Clarets, led by captain Jo Holt, continued to push on.

Midfield dynamo Jo Rohman helped provide attacking build ups through Emily Forrest, Meeks and youngster Lucie Berwick, and Berwick eventually levelled proceedings with a powerful shot which deflected off a defender and over the keeper.

The Clarets continued to raise their game and were pushing hard for the winner.

The Clarets saw close range shots and headers all pass the wrong side of the woodwork, while Tranmere were able to counter attack and Rogers made a number of excellent saves. Tranmere also had a goal chalked off for off-side.

However, with time running out, Hayley Newham played an inch-perfect pass to Hesketh, who found the back of the net. A tense few minutes followed but the Clarets saw out the game.

Next match is at Blackpool Ladies on Sunday.
