Lady Clarets win the Lancashire derby to progress in FA Cup

Three goals in the last 20 minutes ensured Burnley Ladies progressed to the next round of the Women’s FA Cup with a convincing victory over Blackpool at Bloomfield Road on Sunday.

Burnley dominated the early exchanges with winger Rachael Wood troubling the Blackpool backline.

A Wood corner was headed narrowly wide by striker Katie Pollard, before the flying winger surged to the bye-line and her cross caused mayhem in the Blackpool area, culminating in a snap-shot from Forrest being saved.

The lady Clarets almost broke the deadlock on 35 minutes when Em Forrest won possession and passed to Wood, whose 20-yard drive was clawed out of the top corner by the Blackpool keeper.

Burnley opened the scoring in the 70th minute. The tireless Charlotte Hartley burst down the right and crossed to the feet of Sarah Buffell-Greenhalgh on the edge of the area, whose right-foot strike arrowed into the bottom corner of the net.

The Clarets almost doubled their advantage when Buffell-Greenhalgh jinked her way through, only for her shot to be blocked.From the rebound, full back Claire Collins unleashed a thunderous drive that drew another superb save.

Blackpool almost levelled in the 75th minute when their striker found herself unmarked 12 yards out, but she was denied by a superb double save from keeper Sophie Valentine.

The lady Clarets bagged their second goal 10 minutes from the end when Hartley again supplied Buffel-Greenhalgh, and, although her first shot was blocked, she reacted quickly to fire home.

Burnley made sure of their safe passage into the next round when Greenhalgh headed into the path of Forrest, whose drive had too much venom for the keeper.

On Sunday, unbeaten Burnley return to league action with a visit to Bolton Wanderers.
