Kightly: “There’s a long way to go yet’

But the on-loan wide man feels Burnley’s strength of character - demonstrated again by coming back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Millwall on Saturday - can only serve them well as they continue to top the Championship.

Kightly is claiming the equaliser at The Den, his shot turned into his own net by Lions left back Shane Lowry, and the draw left Burnley a point clear of second place Leicester City.

Kightly, who won the league with Wolves in 2009, said: “It’s too early to talk about promotion, there are a lot of games.

“But what we have got is an honest bunch of lads and some good quality as well. With those two ingredients we can cause problems in the division.

“We just take it game by game, no-one’s getting carried away. That’s something that the gaffer brings in. It’s very early on, we’ve got a lot of games left.

“We want to keep it going.

“We’ve got a tough game next week against Bournemouth, so if we can get through that game and then we’ve got the international break to have a rest, because we’ve got a very small squad so those rest periods are important for us then we can be ready to go again.”

Kightly is yet to experience defeat in the league since arriving from Stoke City on deadline day, indeed, his nine Championship outings have seen seven wins and two draws, and he smiled: “I haven’t been wanting to say that because I don’t want to jinx things but it’s gone really well.

“I’m really enjoying it.

“Obviously when we’re playing as well as we are and picking up results as we are then you do enjoy it.

“There’s a great set of lads and the gaffer’s different class.

“There’s a really good feel about the place at the minute.

“We’re an honest bunch of lads and we’re going to keep going.”

Of Burnley’s equalising goal, Kightly laid claim to what would be his first strike for the club: “Someone said they’ve given it an own goal.

“I think it was just on target, maybe hitting the post, so I’ve got to claim that. If they’ve given their goal to Shittu I’ve got to claim mine.“It’s nice to get off the mark.”
