Kevin Long happy to start

The 24-year-old was last selected in Sean Dyche’s starting XI in the seven-goal thriller against Southampton in the FA Cup at the St Mary’s Stadium - with the Irishman scoring his first and only goal for the club.

Long, signed from Cork City by former boss Owen Coyle in January 2010, did feature in Burnley’s 3-0 triumph against Charlton Athletic at The Valley in March, but only appeared as an 89th minute replacement for defender Michael Duff.

Following the 1-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in the Capital One Cup at Turf Moor, Long said: “I don’t think we played particularly well tonight. It was an in-between performance. Our keeper didn’t have a save to make but we created few chances. It was always going to be a one goal game.

“I was delighted. It’s my first game since playing against Southampton in the FA Cup last season. I was delighted to get 90 minutes but disappointed with the result. I’ve been working hard in training, keeping my fitness up, waiting to get my chance.”

Long added: “It’s been hard work not playing. My aim is to break in to the team so I just tried to do as well as I could in the game. If I keep working hard, hopefully the gaffer will give me my chance. Then when I play these games I just need to perform to the best of my ability. It’s every lads dream to play in the Premier League and now we’re here I’m just itching for my chance.”
