Jones looking at positives from Black Cats draw

Midfielder David Jones is refusing to dwell on the lack of goals scored by the Clarets so far this season.

Instead the 29-year-old is focussing his attention on building on the foundations that have been put in place over the first five Premier League fixtures.

Like last season in the Championship, Sean Dyche’s side are proving hard to beat after registering three successive 0-0 draws.

Jones, who has had previous experience in England’s top tier with Derby County, Wolves and Wigan, insists there are many positives to take from the journey so far.

“Obviously, we’re aware that we need to score goals but it’s not something that we’re going to dwell on,” he said.

“We know that if you come and watch us, we’ve created chances, been organised, limited chances for the opposition and there’s a lot of positives to take so I’d prefer to be building off a good foundation and with a bit more confidence and cutting edge in front of goal we’ll be doing well. The work rate was brilliant once again.”

He added: “Of course you can draw on previous experiences. You’re learning all the time in football so each game brings up its own challenges. I’m just enjoying it with Burnley at the moment.”

Jones was replaced by Ross Wallace in the 86th minute of the stalemate against Sunderland at Turf Moor when going to ground awkwardly unchallenged.

But it’s too early to tell whether the injury will rule him out of the trip to the Hawthorns to face West Brom.

“It was towards the end of the game so you don’t know whether or not there’s a little bit of fatigue in there that can affect your muscles so we’ll just re-evaluate in the next day or so,” said Jones.

“I just felt a twinge when I kicked the ball, but at this stage it’s impossible to tell what the problem is.”
