Jeff is up for Gunners test
Record signing Jeff Hendrick is looking forward to testing himself against Arsenal on Sunday.
Hendrick scored his first Burnley goal in the 2-0 win at home to Watford on Monday night, and, after a taste of facing Europe’s elite with the Republic of Ireland at Euro 2016, he can’t wait to face Arsene Wenger’s side.
The 24-year-old said: “It’s going to be hard. They’re off the back of a great win this weekend, but it’s why we’re in this league because we want to test ourselves against these teams.
“We’ve earned the right to be here so we’re looking forward to it. It will be a great challenge for us.
“I enjoyed it over the summer and I’ll take a lot of confidence from that.
“I’ve got a lot of belief in myself but that’s gone and I’ve got a new task now.
“I’m trying to qualify for the World Cup and I’ve got the task here with Burnley as well. I want to play as many games as I can and help the team as much as I can.”
Hendrick was delighted to get off the mark in his first home start, heading in Steven Defour’s corner to put Burnley in front against the Hornets: “I said I’d love to get a goal. That’s what I want to do - I’d love to start scoring a few more goals from midfield.
“It was good to get that but the main thing is getting the three points. I thought the lads were brilliant from the first minute right up until the end. We worked hard, we pressed them, we were on the front foot and we set the tempo.”
Hendrick scored his first international goal last month in Serbia, and added: “It’s going in the right direction. I made a conscious effort to get a bit more forward. I’ve been saying to myself ‘I want to score more goals’ and thankfully I’ve got two now this month. I’ll look to carry that on and hopefully I can get more.
“But the main thing for me coming here was to be confident and I needed to show people what I can do. One of the main things for me is to get goals and help the team score goals. I’m happy that we did that and got the three points.
“The main thing is the three points. Everyone worked so hard and now, we’ve got to recover and rest right so that we’re ready for Sunday. It’s going to be another hard game.”
