The Clarets went behind early on after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck for the Gunners, but drew level before the break courtesy of a bizarre defensive mix-up.

Granit Xhaka attempted to make a clearance insider his own box, but only succeeded in cannoning the ball of the stomach of Chris Wood from close range, leaving Arsenal stopper Bernd Leno completely helpless.

Both sides enjoyed periods of ascendancy in the second half without being able to edge ahead, although Sean Dyche’s men had to survive a couple of late scares when Erik Pieters was adjudged to have blocked a shot on the line with his arm.

Referee Andre Marriner initially showed a red card to the defender and awarded the visitors a penalty before a VAR review revealed that the ball had in fact struck Pieters on the shoulder.

The Burnley man was allowed to stay on the pitch, and the penalty decision was overturned. Mikel Arteta’s men also hit the post in the dying seconds, but the Clarets hung on for the point.
