Burnley transfer news: Clarets still in running for defender, Sky pundit talks up exit

Burnley are on a bit of a roll right now.

Sean Dyche’s men made it three wins on the bounce in all competitions with victory over high-flying Aston Villa in midweek, and with every passing game, the threat of relegation seems to fade more and more.

A key player in their revitalisation of recent weeks has been Dwight McNeil, and the 21-year-old was on song once more against the Villans on Wednesday night.

The winger scored one and assisted another in the 3-2 win, and his performance was so good that it had Sky Sports pundit Lianne Sanderson talking up the prospect of him sealing a high-profile move away from Turf Moor.

She said: "He’s an old-fashioned winger who provides a service for the centre-forward. He can deliver the ball, he gets at players, and I think he’s really exciting.

"He's been doing very well this season, and I definitely anticipate a bigger club coming in for him at some point because he looks like a different level.”

By pretty much every metric, McNeil looks to be improving on his form this season.

The youngster has recorded a 12.2% increase in his average crossing accuracy compared to last term, as well as a 4.5% increase in his passing accuracy, a 4.8% increase in his shooting accuracy, and a 3.2% increase in his total action success rate, as per Wyscout.

If he keeps this up, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him attract attention from the upper echelons of the Premier League.

Elsewhere, the Clarets are still in the running to land Preston North End defender Ben Davies.

Widespread reports on Thursday suggested that Celtic had agreed a pre-contractual agreement with the 25-year-old, with a move set to happen in the summer.

However, Radio Clyde journalist Alison Conroy suggested that there is still some way to go before a deal is made official, and The Sun reporter Alan Nixon admitted on Twitter earlier in the day that it was “possible” Burnley could look to make a last gasp approach for the player.

The Clarets are also being linked with Stoke City centre-back Nathan Collins, but failed with an initial bid for the teenager earlier in the week.
