The 22-year-old netted twice in a 3-1 win, with West Ham right back Carl Jenkinson adding a third, and the former Bournemouth man was thrilled to score in front of his home crowd while wearing the Three Lions.

Having won promotion to the Premier League with Burnley as Championship player of the year, Ings was equally thrilled with his third and fourth goals for his country: “Its definitely up there in terms of my career, those are the moments I want, step by step, and nights like this show what hard work can do.

“The injuries I had were low moments in my life, but this is fantastic.

“I dreamed of scoring a hat-trick! But it was important we got the win, and the two goals helped.

“I missed a header, I saw it last minute, but it was good to follow that with a goal, which gave me confidence to go on. The second hit my right leg, my left leg and then went in, but they are the goal strikers love.”

Ings was also thrilled with the crowd at Turf Moor, with a crowd of 10,711 braving the cold: “It was definitely a good night, I knew it was going to be special for the town, and it was a great turnout - I thank them for coming out.

“But to get two goals caps off a fantastic night.

“The crowd were fantastic, I heard my name from start to finish and it was great they came out to see us.”
