Ings cracker is in vain as reserves suffer rare setback

Brian Jensen spilled a free kick from Karim Rodgers, and Millar turned and drilled in the loose ball.

And four minutes later Smith was on hand to add his second from David Mellor’s cross.

Jensen kept it at 3-0 when he produced a fine stop to keep out Millar’s volley, but Burnley knew they needed to improve after the break.

That they did, and Paterson was denied by keeper Dean Bouzanis, before Ings - who netted on his reserve team comeback against Preston - struck again just before the hour.

Hines fed the ball into the box, and Ings, despite the ball being behind him, adjusted his body to finish in stunning style, finding the top corner.

Steven Hewitt and Cameron Howieson replaced Joe McKee and Paterson shortly after. and Burnley began to control the game.

Howieson could have scored with his first touch, before Hines netted his first goal for the club with two minutes remaining, breaking clear before passing the ball inside the bottom corner.

The Clarets threw everything at Oldham in a desperate bid to snatch a point - Jensen even racing up the pitch to attack a corner - but Burnley lost for the first time since their first game of the season.
