“I don’t think we were a million miles off” - Sean Dyche after Burnley’s 2-1 defeat at home to West Ham

Sean Dyche felt his side were beaten by the better team on the night, as West Ham kept their Champions League hopes alive.

The Hammers came from 1-0 down, from a Chris Wood penalty - his seventh goal in as many games - to win 2-1 with a Michail Antonio brace.

David Moyes said his players were “terrific”, on an awful night at Turf Moor that felt more like November than May, and Dyche concurred, rather than pick fault with his own players: “It’s a strange one.

”I didn’t think we were a million miles off, and they were good - they are chasing the Champions League spots for a reason, they are a good outfit.

”Both teams took the game on and played at a real tempo, and they affected the game better.”

Burnley had started well, getting the ball to Wood and Matej Vydra early, and Wood was upended by Tomas Soucek after brilliantly bringing down a glorious ball from Ashley Westwood, leading to the penalty.

However, as in two of the previous four games, Burnley saw a lead turn into defeat, as Antonio scored twice in eight minutes before half-time.

Dyche said: “We wanted to affect them. You can always question can we hold on to it for longer, but we made a mistake by giving the ball away for the first goal, and the second one we don’t react to a cross.

”We still have a chance to get a point with Jay Rodriguez late on, and that is sort of credit to the players for staying in the game.”

Antonio also scored the winner the last time the sides met at the London Stadium in January, and he was a surprise pick, having recently suffered a hamstring injury.

Dyche admitted: “We thought he would be fit. They have had a good squad season. You can tell there is an edge to them. They have got that momentum.

”But I don’t think we are a million miles away tonight against a good outfit.

”The consistency of performance is very important for us.

”We haven’t got the points recently but the consistency of performance has been there.”
