Heaton set to sign new Turf contract

New deal: Keeper Tom Heaton is poised to extend his contract with Burnley

The 28-year-old arrived from Bristol City last summer on a free transfer on a two-year contract, with an option for a third.

And Heaton, who started his career at Manchester United, will now put pen to paper on fresh terms, with the length of the contract to be confirmed.

Heaton started every Championship game last season, keeping 19 clean sheets as Burnley surged to promotion to the Premier League.

And Heaton, who is nursing a calf strain that saw him sit out Burnley’s opening pre-season fixture in Austria against Grossklein on Sunday, will join Sam Vokes, Kieran Trippier and Scott Arfield in penning new deals after playing key roles in promotion.

In January, Vokes signed an extension to take him through to the summer of 2017, while Trippier agreed a new three-year deal in the close season.

Arfield, meanwhile, also put pen to paper on a similar deal, extending his contract by two years to the summer of 2017.

Luke O’Neill, who was out of contract this summer, also agreed a new two-year deal.

The 22-year-old has yet to make a competitive start for Burnley, making only two appearances from the bench since arriving from Mansfield Town two years ago.

Last season he spent time out on loan in League 2 with York City and Southend United, and he could seal a loan switch to Barnsley in League 1 next week as he steps up his experience.

O’Neill. who started his career with Leicester City, currently has a slight knee problem, which has delayed the move, but that could go through as soon as it clears up.

Regarding contracts, two weeks ago boss Sean Dyche said: “Some naturally came into play because of the success side of things. Tripps is a really important one because I think people were wondering.

“There are ongoing talks with others.

“Some had things in their contracts, some are negotiables, so it’s ongoing with the other players as well.”

The club remain hopeful of securing Danny Ings to a new deal, with only a year remaining of the four-year contract he signed when he arrived from Bournemouth in the summer of 2011.
