Heaton named in England squad

Clarets captain Tom Heaton has retained his place in Roy Hodgson’s England squad.

The Burnley keeper is the only Championship player named in the 22-man panel for the Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Switzerland.

Heaton is the only uncapped member of the group, although he was part of the squad for the June fixtures against Republic of Ireland and Slovenia.

He said on Thursday of his England hopes ahead of Burnley’s 2-1 win at former club Bristol City: “I’ve no expectation really. I really enjoyed it last time I was there. Of course I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t holding out hope to be involved.

“But the main focus for me will be performing on Saturday and whatever happens I’ll keep trying to perform and get better.”

Martin Dobson was the last Burnley player, in 1974, to win a full England cap.

The squad is: Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), Jack Butland (Stoke City), Tom Heaton (Burnley).
