Jay Rodriguez forced Ben Foster into a smart save early on with a crisp right-footed effort and later fired into the gloves of the Watford goalkeeper.

The Clarets went agonisingly close to taking the lead when Matej Vydra caught Foster off his line, the Czech Republic international's attempt came back off the upright, Rodriguez's rebound was then blocked on the line by Craig Dawson before Josh Brownhill dragged his shot well wide.

Dawson had the away side's best chance of the half when towering above James Tarkowski to meet Tom Cleverley's corner, but the defender's header was just too high.
