Burnley beat Preston 2-0 in the Capital One Cup second round on Tuesday night, with goals from Kieran Trippier and Danny Ings.

North End made life difficult for the Clarets, but Dyche said: “We never expected an easy game, I think us scoring early in a strange way gave them a bit more freedom because they had to have a go.

“The second goal calmed it down a bit, but in the second half they really stepped onto us and tried to stop us from playing, which worked for a while until we gathered our thoughts and started using the ball better as the game went on.”

He added: “We created enough overall of good quality chances to win the match.

“Ingsy had the goalkeeper scrambling in the second half and Vokesy had a couple of near ones - one cleared off the line. Overall I was reasonably pleased with that side.

“I was reasonably pleased with the performance.

“We’re a work in progress but it’s very difficult to dominate a whole game and you have to find ways of winning a match.

“There was a good mixture. There was some good quality and some good play at times, and then there was some resilience at times and plenty of energy as well.

“That mixture that we want to find is there, it just needs brushing up and tidying up at times.

“But overall I’m very pleased and the main thing is it’s a clean sheet and two goals.”

After a first defeat of the season at Brighton, Burnley were back on the horse, but Dyche underlined: “Someone said it was a nice reaction from Saturday, it’s not about reaction, it’s about being ready to compete in the next game. You shouldn’t need a reaction, you should need to be ready to play.”
