George Boyd signs three-year deal with Clarets

Clarets boss Sean Dyche has ended a lengthy pursuit with the capture of Hull City’s George Boyd.

The 28-year-old has agreed a three-year deal for an unconfirmed £3m fee - which would equal Burnley’s transfer record signing of Hibernian’s Steven Fletcher in 2009.

Dyche has long admired Boyd, during a career which has taken him from non-league with Stevenage Borough, to an FA Cup Final, the Premier League and European football with Hull.

Dyche said of the Scotland international: “He’s a player me and my staff have liked for a long time.

“The reason for the lateness of it was purely we didn’t think he was available.

“His availability came a matter of days ago. Steve Bruce is a massive fan of his but felt he didn’t want to hold him back.”

Hull boss Steve Bruce said on Sunday after his side’s 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa: “I’ve been in the game a long time, and if all the

professional footballers were like George Boyd then my job would be easy. We wish him well and it probably looks as though he’s going to Burnley.”

And Dyche concurred: “You’ve probably seen Steve’s comments about him as a person and a professional - it’s not a prerequisite of ours, but we like that professionalism within the group.

“There’s no lack of physicality from him, we know the distances he covers, the way he looks after himself, but also the quality.

“His record, down the years, he scores goals and can create goals.

“We’ve gone up a level where that’s harder to do, so we need the players that can do that.

“He’s scored goal literally at every level from Conference all the way through, and he’s earned his spurs.

“His mentality is solid, he knows the business he’s in and he’s prepared to give everything to be a success, and I like those types.”

Asked where he envisages using Boyd, Dyche added: “People will have seen him left, right, the number 10 playing out of a three in midfield, and we want and need that flexibility to some degree, because of the size of the squad.”
